Language:
Cantonese

People use spoken and written languages to express themselves; deaf people use sign language in the same ways. A sign language combines hand shapes, orientation and movement of the hands, arms or body, and facial expressions to fluidly express a speaker's thoughts. It shares many similarities with spoken language and is natural to deaf people who do not orientate their lives to the world of sound. Hundreds of sign languages are in use all over the world and are based on local deaf cultures.

Through the two sessions of the workshop, you will learn vocabularies and simple expressions in the Cantonese sign language that are widely used in local deaf community in Hong Kong. You will also help create a set of sign language to name some HKUST landmarks. Created sign language words will be turned into visuals and be showcased in the diversAbility festival in the future.

Please contact Ms Nilam Chan at (852) 3469 2497 or nilamchan@ust.hk for enquires.
