Barrier-Free Discovery Tour to United Kingdom 2025

Barrier-Free Discovery Tour to the United Kingdom 2025

Building on the success of last year’s Barrier-Free Discovery Tour to Singapore, which engaged students, faculty, and staff members in providing firsthand experiences and raising  awareness of inclusiveness and accessibility within the community, SEN Support organized a tour to the United Kingdom this year focused exclusively on the development of faculty and staff in supporting students wuth SEN. We had a fruitful and insightful journey with our participants!

Tour Overview

From 15 to 22 June 2025, 12 faculty and staff members embarked on a transformative journey to the United Kingdom, where they visited leading universities, barrier-free excursions and participated in an international conference on SEN and mental wellness, along with specialized trainings on SEN.

This insightful experience offered a dynamic blend of academic exchange, hands-on learning, and strategic dialogue, deepening participants’ understanding of inclusive education models and global best practices in accessibility and student support. By engaging directly with leading institutions and experts, participants explored innovative approaches to campus accessibility, student services, and support frameworks for students with SEN. The tour reinforced our commitment to cultivating a learning environment where every student feels supported, empowered, and included, and where diversity is embraced, ultimately inspiring meaningful and sustainable improvements across our campus.

University Visits and Exchange

Participants engaged in immersive learning experiences at University College London, University of Bristol, University of Southampton, and Royal Holloway, University of London. These visits provided firsthand insights into how inclusive education is implemented through universal design principles, student support systems, and innovative campus infrastructure. Conversations with local experts highlighted effective strategies for integrating accessibility into both physical spaces and everyday student services.

Conference and Training on SEN and Inclusive Practices

A key highlight of the tour was attending an international conference focused on SEN and mental wellness. The event brought together experts from diverse disciplines to share holistic care models for student wellbeing, collaborative frameworks for mental health support, and emerging trends in inclusive and trauma-informed practices. These sessions offered valuable perspectives on embedding mental wellness into institutional support systems in sustainable and impactful ways.

Participants also took part in hands-on training sessions aimed at supporting individuals with visual impairments and physical disabilities. Through practical activities, they explored assistive technologies, mobility and navigation strategies, and inclusive communication methods. These experiences emphasized the importance of empathy-driven service design and equipped participants with practical knowledge to better understand and respond to the needs of students with SEN.

Exploring Barrier-Free Excursions and Public Accessibility

The tour also included visits to the British Museum and Windsor Castle, where participants explored barrier-free excursions and public accessibility. These opportunities offered practical insights into how historical and cultural institutions can embrace inclusivity through thoughtful design and service adaptations. Participants observed elements such as resources for visitors with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), large print and braille materials, tactile exhibits, accessible pathways, and audio guides enhanced with subtitles and graphics, showcasing effective strategies for inclusive access. These experiences highlighted the significance of inclusive design beyond the classroom and sparked ideas for improving accessibility in campus events and spaces at HKUST.

This journey was more than a tour of professional development opportunity. It was a meaningful step toward cultivating a campus culture of inclusion, accessibility, and respect. Together, let’s continue building an inclusive and accessible campus where everyone feels welcome, valued, and empowered to thrive!
